Do you ever get intimidated by those pretty macrame wall hangings? I do – they look so complicated and time consuming but so pretty at the same time. Making smaller versions of them take less time and is way easier. It’s very beginner friendly too and would be great for people who like easy and fast projects. Read on to see how I created these simple and quick to assemble DIY macrame earrings that would look perfect for any spring wardrobe!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY macrame earrings:
Cut 12 pieces of cotton cord about 12-13 inches in length. This amount of string would be sufficient for both earrings.
Start by looping two strands of cord on the circle as shown – this is what’s usually called a lark’s head knot except we’re using two strands of cord instead of one. Repeat two more times and pull tight. You should have 6 strands of cord on your circle.
Create a square knot on each set of cord. A square knot would use up 4 strings – you should start with the two outer sets and then the middle set of string so it doesn’t confuse you. You should end up with three of these square knots.
Now we’re going to create what’s called an alternating square knot. Count 2 from the outermost strand, and then pick up the 4 after and create your square knot. You will want to knot it a bit further than the upper knots to create some space. Count the next 4 strands and repeat the same square knot.
For the outer two strands, create a double half hitch knot and pull it tight, lining up the resulting knot with the square knot we created in step four. Repeat on the other two of strands on the other side.
Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until you are happy with the length of your macrame dangle. Once you are done, cut off the excess cord. I like using water to soften the cotton cord and tame it so they aren’t flying everywhere. I also used a pointed tool to unravel the cord to create more volume as shown on the right earring.
Finally, attach your earring hooks, and your DIY macrame earrings are done!
Wasn’t that easy and beginner-friendly? These would be a perfect afternoon activity with your girlfriends and a perfect simple gift for anyone who loves boho decor and accessories. Do you love the macrame trend?

Did you leave out a step? I don’t get how you incorporate the outer two strings after the double knot.
