Hi, it’s Rena from thecheesethief.com and today, I’ll be showing you how to make these adorable DIY Kawaii kissing charms out of polymer clay. This tutorial shows you how to make a flower and a bee, but you can make any figures you can think of.
The charms “kiss” because a super strong magnet is placed in each piece of the clay so they are attracted to each other. I think this is by far the cutest craft I have ever made. See my instructions and tips below to make your own set of kissing charms!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY Kawaii Charms:
- Polymer Clay (Translucent White, Yellow, Black)
- Jump Rings
- Eye Pins
- Heavy Duty Magnets (.31 in)
- Cutting Blade
- Dotting Tool or Toothpick
Mark the attracting opposite poles of the magnets with a permanent marker so you’ll know which side of the magnet goes on the exterior edge of the clay.
Roll the yellow clay into a ball and split the ball into 1/3 and 2/3 pieces to make the bee’s body. Wrap the smaller, 1/3 sized piece of clay around the magnet with the marked side facing into the clay. You want the marked side of the magnet to face down towards the outside of the clay (see image above).
Place the other 2/3 piece on top of the 1/3 piece and roll the clay carefully into rounded cylinder shapes, being careful that the magnet has not shifted.
Cut two strips from the black polymer clay to make the bee’s strips.
Attach the strips to the bee and keep note of which side the magnet has been placed on. If you lose track, take the other magnet and bring it close to the clay because the magnet should attract the clay. The magnet is strong, so be careful. If it attaches, it will dent the clay but thankfully if this happens, you can simply reshape the clay.
Create the bee’s face using small pieces of black polymer clay.
Create the wings of the bee by making teardrop shapes. Insert a straight pin from a clipped eye pin into the tapered side of each wing. Curve the wings to create more detail.
Attach the wings in between the two black stripes on the bee. Place the eye pin between the two wings. After everything is attached, you can move on to making the flower charm.
I tried using a baking sheet, but the magnet was so strong that the bee kept “kissing” the sheet and I was afraid it would flatten the face. If you use a wire rack with foil on top, this should help the face of the bee from getting dents.
Let the clay cool down from baking before handling. Your DIY Kawaii charms are ready once cooled.
Now the sweet honey bee and flower will kiss each other as they come close! Watch them in action!
