The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve fallen in love with Valentine’s Day. A whole day about being nice and sharing love with your family and friends? Sounds good to me! I needed some coasters for our living room the other day and figured I might as well make them heart-themed for the upcoming holiday. These Valentine’s Day felted wool DIY heart coasters are pretty basic to make and only require a few craft supplies. Keep in mind, the process to felt these is a bit time-consuming but it goes by much quicker with a box of chocolates and your favorite romantic movie!
- Red Wool Felt
- Pastel Roving Rolls
- Multi Needle Felting Tool
- Single Needle Felting Tool
- Rounded Square Cork Coaster Back (optional)
Begin by cutting the coaster shapes from the wool sheet. I used the cork blanks as a template but you also just cut 4″ x 4″ squares.
Tear off a 6″ strip of the wool roving and position on the newly cut coaster in the shape of a heart.
Remove the cover from the single needle felting tool and begin to press the wool roving into the wool coaster. Unless you have a needle mat, you’re going to need to place a few coasters on top of each other to give the needle enough space. Make sure to stop and separate the coasters every so often so that you don’t accidentally felt all of them together. Also, it’s important to maintain a straight up and down motion while felting or the needles will break.
Once the wool roving is beginning to attach to the wool coaster, you can use the multi-needle tool to press the whole thing in place. I went back and forth with both needles because the single needle tool was better for detail work, while the multi needle tool sped things up.
Continue pressing down the wool roving into the coaster base until the heart is almost flat.
When you’re happy with the look of the coasters, you can decide if you want to leave them as is or use strong silicon glue to attach them to the cork coaster blanks. I wasn’t too worried about condensation on my table so I left them just like this.
I love how adorable these DIY heart Valentine’s Day coasters are going to look on my table and I know we’ll enjoy them for many years to come!
