Glass etching has been on my craft bucket list for a while now. I’m not sure why it has taken me so long, but St. Patrick’s Day gave me a great excuse to try it out. I was surprised how easy it was and now I want to glass etch everything! Follow along as I show you how to make a DIY etched glass shamrock mason jar mug.
Supplies needed to make your own DIY etched glass shamrock mug:
- Armour Glass Etching Kit
- Silhouette Cameo
- Silhouette Stencil Vinyl with Transfer Paper
- Mason Jar Mug
- Votives (optional)
- Green Ribbon
Start by cleaning your glass with soap and water, then dry with a cloth.
Creating your stencil:
I decided on this polka-dot shamrock design from Hero Arts in the Silhouette Online Shop. I measured my glass and sized the shamrock to the size needed for my glass in the Silhouette Studio.
I cut the design on stencil vinyl without the cutting mat. Once my design was cut, I placed the transfer tape on to my design and rubbed to transfer it to the tape. Once my design was off the vinyl paper I placed it on to my glass and gave it another rub.
I carefully pulled off the transfer tape making sure my design was still attached to the glass.
Instead of weeding before I had transferred my design, I decided to weed right on the glass. Weeding means to just get rid of the vinyl you do not need. In this case, I needed to weed the inside of the shamrock but not the dots. The polka-dots in this design made it very hard to weed before the transfer. It was so much easier weeding directly from the jar.
Once your stencil is in place it is time to etch. Wearing gloves I applied a generous amount of the etching cream to the mug. I let the mug sit for 10 minutes before washing the etching cream off.
Once the etching cream was washed away, I cleaned the DIY etched glass mug with a little bit of soap and water. That is all there is to it!
You can add your favorite candies or drink to the DIY etched glass jar. I think this would be a fun surprise gift to leave on someone’s desk on St. Patrick’s day.
You can also put a tea light candle inside to dress up your St. Patrick Day party.
Have fun trying out DIY etched glass projects – I think you’ll love it!
