Sometimes it takes just the simplest of materials to create amazing pieces of art. Take yarn and brass macrame hoops for example. Nothing too complex but when combined, they create this amazing large scale DIY abstract wall art. Just a few repeating circles in various sizes and yarn pom poms is all it takes to transition your decor into a more cozy fall look. This easy DIY abstract wall art uses macrame hoops and yarn in a whole new way!
My favorite part of this piece of art is the scale of it. I love that you can easily add more or less hoops to create a piece that is just perfect for your space. And, how fun would it be to cover an entire wall with it?!
- Macrame Hoops in Various Sizes
- Yarn in Several Fall Colors (the thicker the yarn the better)
- Brass Wire
- Pom Pom Maker (optional)
Begin by laying out your rings on the floor in the pattern that you like. You want to use various sizes so that you can fit them all together like a puzzle. This part is pretty much anything goes. Make a pattern that appeals to you and is the size that you want.
Once you have all your pieces laid out, begin to attach the hoops to each other using your brass wire. You will need about 5 inches of wire for each attachment point. Just use your pliers to wrap the wire tightly around the two hoops where they meet.
Continue to wrap the wire around the attachment points on all your hoops until all the hoops are attached to each other in one big piece.
Now it is time to make your yarn pom poms using the pom pom maker. I made them in several sizes and both in solid yarn colors and mixed to give a little visual interest to them. Check out this yarn wreath tutorial for instructions on how to use the pom pom maker.
Finally your DIY abstract wall art piece is ready to hang. You can hang the hoop art on the wall using thumb tacks or monkey hooks. Then squish your pom poms into the small openings in between the hoops in a random pattern. There is no need to fill all the holes, just do what looks good. Try grouping several pom poms together on just adding a large pom pom to a small hoop. Play around here and see what appeals to you.
This piece is great, because depending on the colors of yarn you use, you can easily transition the piece through all the seasons. Use oranges, tans, creams, and navy for a fall look, or shades of red and green at Christmas. And since the yarn is just tucked it, it is easy to change it up at any time.
